A friend who lives abroad wants to contact me using Whatsapp.
I have it on my smart phone but I do not know how to set it up so I can contact her.
Any help much appreciated.

Have you clicked on it, and looked around? Mick set mine up for me, but it seems pretty straightforward x

It's very user friendly Cruiser....all it will need from you is your phone number and a password but once in, you don't need to remember it.
Have a play about and see the settings for more info

Cruiser, if you have WhatsApp up an running on your phone just go to your contacts, find your pal, open her page and there you will find some WhatsApp icons for Message, Voice call and Video call. Tap the one you want an you are in.
If WhatsApp is only installed but not set up for use you need to get started. Click on the icon to open it. Read the Ts and Cs then tap 'Agree and continue', tap 'Continue' and tap 'Allow' twice to grant the app access to your contacts and files on your phone.
Enter your mobile number and tap 'Confirm'. You will be sent a six-digit access code by SMS, which you enter into the verification box, sometimes the app automatically detects when the message has been received and does it for you. You are now good to go.
If you want to make voice or video calls make sure your phone is on Wi-Fi, this makes them free.

WM,
How do I know I am on Wifi?
I am on a fixed monthly contract with Tesco. I get 500 mins of calls, 5000 texts,1GB of data and roaming is on.
Will try later what you suggest and come back to you.

Go to Settings on your phone and at the top of the first screen you will see Wi-Fi tap it and if it is off tap the slide switch to turn it on. Connect to your home network with the name and password provided by your ISP. If Wi-Fi is on WhatsApp will prioritise it. It saves your data for when you are out and about.

Cruiser,
this might help. It is what I said earlier but with graphics to follow each step.
