I am unable to connect to the internet at home. The router usually has the powerlight, the internet connect indicator and one of the channel lights on (either flashing or steady); however at the moment all it's showing is the power on and the green WiFi satellite symbol - both a steady on. The orange tick that normally flashes to say there is connection isn't on at all.

I called Sky and they tested the line and another thing both of which have come back as working (and to add that my phone is working fine, as is the TV). Sky now - as a next step - want me to unscrew the cover from the front of the telephone socket that's on the wall as I gather there is another test plug there that can take the router plug (which is square vs rectangular like the phone plug). But, that is quite a mission as I've got a heavy piece of furniture in front of the socket and in all honesty I'm not sure I want to start fiddling with that box in case I break something and then I'm responsible for the repair and potentially end up with no internet as well as no phone?

Personally I think it's the actual router that's faulty. So just wondering - can I just buy one from somewhere like Maplin or get one online and use it or do I have to get one from Sky?

I had that problem with TalkTalk and had to do the same with the main phone socket. Mine is buried deep in the under stairs cupboard. It did the trick though and it saved the cost of a call out from TalkTalk. I think it resets the system. I then put the router back in the original place and it has been fine ever since.

May be worth a try.

Our router has a reset button, on the back. You switch it all off then press the reset button, that often does the trick.
Or even just switching it off at the mains, waiting 30 seconds then switching it back on again.

Have you tried googling your make and model of router for problems and ideas??

Ria, why are Sky telling you to go dig about in the BT master socket? There are no user serviceable parts in there just a few IDC connectors to add extension wiring, and a special tool is advised for that job.

What you should have attached directly to that socket's phone port, the oblong BT431A plug socket combo, is a Sky micro filter/splitter. This is a small box with a BT plug on a short lead at one end and BT and RJ11 sockets in the housing.

There is a chance that the micro filter/splitter has failed and might need replacing. There is also a chance that you might at some time have snagged the cable from the splitter to the modem/router, so check that out as well. Also try rebooting the router - turn it off, leave it for a minute before turning back on.

Di - when my brother was here he did the on/off and reset thing and it didn't sadly didn't make a difference.

Frank, I agree that I find it odd that I should be digging in the BT master socket, but it seems to be a common request - Molly was asked to do that as was another friend of mine (sadly in his case it didn't fix the problem though). As for the filter / splitter thing - I have one of these in use at the moment so it could well be that that's faulty. I think I have another one somewhere in the house so will look for that and try swapping it out to see if that makes a difference. Fingers crossed.

If not I suspect I'll have to bite the bullet and move furniture about and unscrew the cover of the master socket - but not without having confirmation from Sky that they will foot the cost of any repairs if needed.

Well no luck so far - I found the new filter / splitter and that didn't make a difference. I also switched off the router at the plug (again) and that also didn't work.

So tonight I'm going to have to try and move things about so I can get at the master socket to see if that fixes things - it's either that or buy a new router (which I'm not sure will work if I don't get it from Sky?)

Keep it simple first, Ria.

Check the cable from the splitter to the router. Check the eithernet cable from the router to the laptop/PC - maybe try a different port on the router. Check the network adapter in Device Manager - make sure there are no yellow or red indicators. If there are, try disabling and re-enabling it and/or updating the driver. As a last resort you could uninstall it and reboot - Win will find it as a new device and reinstall it.

Note to self - if no internet at home one needs to print off instructions at work because you cannot access them at home!

needless to say all I remembered was to check the cable from the splitter - oh dear.... well now this is printed off and I'll give things a go tonight
