WM or Suff

my laptop keeps "freezing" have to turn it off and reboot,seems to happen quite often and more than once at a time
any thoughts/help appreciated

Vic, it could be almost anything from a bad driver a corrupt or missing .dll or malware.

As a quick attempt at a solution you could try a system restore to a time before the crashes started, but if that does not work, and a better option anyway, would be to run Scannow to repair system files.

From the Start button go to Programs then Accessories and right click on Command Prompt and from the menu choose Run as Administrator. At the command type in sfc /scannow (note the space between sfc and /scannow) then press Enter and let sfc do its job. Once it is finished do a reboot.

Check that the air coming out of the laptop is not hotter than expected. It could be that one of your fans is having problems. That causes hardware hangs and freezes. Also make sure that vents are not blocked and air can flow freely.

Then there is memory checking. What version of windows do you have? For windowsxp you can use Memtest86.

For windows7 especially 64 bit, you can do the following.

Go to start-Run (or if run is not visible, go to Start and type into the search programs window at the bottom)

Type mdsched.exe into the box (whichever one) and select to run the memcheck the next time you restart.

Restart the machine and check the report.

Once you are sure you don't have a hardware issue, you can start looking at drivers.

I also forgot to say,

change your crash options so you can capture the blue screen error message. Usually that is the very best indicator of what is wrong.

Go to Start then right click on your computer. This may be Computer, My computer or a name if your computer is named.

Select properties->Advanced System Settings.

Click on the settings button for Startup and Recovery

Uncheck the Automatic restart option.

Save and exit.

The next time it crashes and blue screens, it will leave the blue screen up and you will be able to copy down the error message.
