Help needed urgently.

Hello. I don't get on here much these days and don't even know if you will remember me. However, I do have a question and I would really appreciate some help.

We have three computers, one desktop and 2 laptops. My husband switched on the desk top the other day and it asked for the Windows ID/password. He never had one and has been able to get into his account before this. The computer is an old one and we are looking to get another but in the meantime is there any way he can overcome this obstacle.

The other question is about my laptop. I have always kept it on US time and my home page is the American MSN with my old home town news. Suddenly it switched to Belgian time and local news on the home page in Dutch. I've tried everything to get it back to the original home page but when I do it is temporary.

The other laptop which is an HP and new only gives instructions in either Italian or Polish. I can't get it to change to English so I can get it set up and working. Any ideas other than enrolling in a Polish class?

Any help will be gratefully received.

Hi Jean,

Good to 'see' you. I just got in and need sleep, so I will take a look in detail tomorrow.

For now, the Italian/Polish laptop - start it up and hover the mouse over the Start button. When the Start menu appears go to Control Panel - Pannello di controllo or Panel Sterowania then look for Region and Language - Regione e lingua or Region i jezyk or similar. Thanks Google.

In the new window you will see a drop-down under Format: and you can change to English GB or US. Apply that and OK your way out. Reboot and it should start up in a language you understand. From there you can then change other things like the keyboard and currency etc.

If using W8 take the cursor to the bottom left corner of the screen and do a right click. Control Panel is on the pop-up menu about two thirds down.

Jean, my gut instinct with the 'Dutch' laptop is that you have had a Browser Helper Object (BHO) installed from somewhere. As a first step do a deep scan - folders and files - on all drives with your AV to see if anything turns up, then download and run these:

The old desktop I am assuming is XP. Turn it off then after a while turn on again and when it gets to the welcome screen do nothing but hit the 'Enter' button.

XP had a login expiry of 72 days but even if you told it to auto-login and not change it would sometimes forget after about a year.

Jean hasn't been on line at all for over a week now. There is something going on with the internet in Belgium and it seems to be affecting her. It isn't like Jean at all to be ill mannered - there has to be some reason.

Thanks Shell, I was being a bit torn about this as I do know that Jean certainly would not ignore things, as Rodo says, and I found it a tad strange for her not to reply.

Maybe things were worse than she let on and Jean really is having difficulties we cannot know about.

I can't seem to contact her at all now, but will keep you posted with any news.
Sorry miasmum, I hope I didn't come across a bit sharp. You normally would have been quite right in what you said. That sort of thing does happen on forums as I know only too well. I don't seem to be able to contact her at all on line now. I will leave it another couple of days and maybe try to ring her for news.
