The Grace

A true story, apparently, as reported recently in The Times Diary …..
Some time back in the 1950's, a sumptuous formal dinner was laid on at Blenheim Palace for the South African national rugby team. The Springboks' manager, Danie Craven, was asked if he would say Grace before the meal, and, in Afrikaans, he duly did so.
"As 'n enkele een van julle vuilgoed soveel as knyp a teelepel, jy sal wees op die volgende vliegtuig huis. Amen"
Of course, the English hosts were totally oblivious to what he said, which was in fact:
"If a single one of you buggers so much as pinches a teaspoon, you'll be on the next plane home. Amen."
