Me too, I actually had the thought that I would be very happy if the series ended forever with Matthew, Mary and the baby together...and then....

I was so disappointed. I was just thinking how nice it was to watch something where nothing awful happened and then wham..........
I wonder if he did die or not. It does seem rather ludicrous if he does - one family with two deaths both connected to child birth. What a shame that it wasn't the other way round though and Mary died instead of Celia - she is such a cow that Mary.

Oh I think he was definitely dead Debih - he had his eyes wide open and blood coming out of his ear
I did have a inkling as i heard a rumour 'Matthew' was being written out to do other projects. All of the young Downton actors are getting a lot of interest from the States where Downton is huge!!
It was terribly sad though - poor Mary

He has been made such a fuss of in the States that I think he had dollar signs in front of his eyes! They were even talking about him being the next James Bond.

Yes, it had been "knowledge" he was going to leave the cast for several months now, although it had been rumoured it was going to be in episode 1 of the new series. There were similar mutterings, I think, about Dame Maggie and the next series, but I'm not sure what her intentions are now ......
Not sure how it is going to affect the overall story arc - it's a little bit back to the drawing board now.
