Ally, that's exactly it! She drives really well, you wouldn't know she was a learner if she drove you

That's exactly how it's been with Joe. He's been driving us around since his second fail in June and his driving was really good. There was absolutely no reason why he shouldn't be driving. We've been saying for ages that it'd fairer if it was done as a continual assessment rather than a nerve-wracking test.

His fail in June was just due to a stupid mistake. He was told to drive along a road, it's in the poshest part of town and it's where his old primary school is. The residents have been complaining about school parking for years and now there are double yellows virtually the whole length with just a few breaks in them, but they get parked in by school staff as there's not enough car parking on the site. Anyway he was told to pull over on this road when it was safe to do so but he couldn't see anywhere and was running out of road with a junction coming up so panicked and pulled over onto double yellows which was a fail. Five minutes from the end of the test. It was a bit sneaky of the examiner too.

He's driven us to Stafford a few times recently and has done fine with John helping him with lanes but he's driven in on his own this morning during rush hour, and dropped his friend at college too, so he could work out timings and parking for himself for college tomorrow. He's now popped out again to see my parents.

Yes, well done to Joe; it must be a heck of a relief for him to have got that pass at long last.

That comment about the stupid mistake costing him a pass previously, Jo … it's so easy to do in the spur of the moment when you're all hyped up - I had something similar on my driving test. Bearwood High Street, stop start down it, in a crawl of traffic, following a bus. Bus starts forward, then stops suddenly - just beyond a pedestrian crossing. I followed it, realised I shouldn't have, and JUST managed to squeeze right behind the bus so I was clear of the crossing. I remember the examiner turning round and looking VERY pointedly to make sure I had cleared it. Thankfully, I got the pass that time (second attempt) - phew! :D

I took my test in Grimsby when in the the RAF at Binbrook, Lincs.

On the lesson just before the test I am behind a bus. It stops so I stop, it pulls away, so do I. This happens a few times when instructor Cpl Kerwick tells me that if I was testing for a bus I would pass, but as I am not picking up passingers I should imagine that I am driving a car.

I have a good imagination so I passed. ;)
