Aircraft engines need air to operate so it is better to have more air coming in than too little, esp at 35,000 feet, so they are designed to be a bit greedy. In flight the excess 'fresh' air is bled off from the intake and some of it is passed to the cabin and mixed with recirculated air in about a 50:50 mix - the recirculated air is passed through HEPA filters. Old air is dumped from the cargo hold so the cycle is continuous. It has a lot to do with controlling pressure, temperature and normal oxy levels.

The most dangerous time is with passenger embarkation and disembarkation when only the aux engine is running to provide essential system services - that's when you need to be most careful. You are probably most at risk once you get airside and are going through the boarding or arrivals procedures.
