I was having trouble with Google maps in the Edge browser - things had gone missing such as measure distance, directions, layers and so on. It has happened on other sites.
I was blaming Microsft updates as Firefox and Chrome were still the same, but I rarely use them. Then, in Firefox, I got a pop-up informing me that my ad blocker had updated. PING!
Back to Edge and turn off the ad blocker in Google Maps and it is back to normal. You do not need to turn it off completely, you can do it for individual sites.
So, peeps, if you are having problems with some sites that were not there before check your ad blocker, if you have one, it might not be Microsoft or Google or Android screwing you over.
