Do you throw stale bread away?

Postby Workingman » 23 May 2024, 19:40

I used to but now I chop it into croutons and toast or fry it for the birds. They love them, especially the fried version.

Try it, you'll get loads of birds in your gardens.

You can also fry or low and slow roast things such as old bananas, apples, pears etc. I even nibble them myself... sometimes.

I don't class it as food waste as it is food for another, just not me.

Certainly not!
I make toast out of it.
For MrsC, you understand. :Hi:

Jen, we have foxes so no rats. A neighbour feeds them, the foxes, raw meat.

I did question her about it re rats, but when I looked it up it is a rat control method - if you have foxes.

The birds take the bread before anything else gets near it.

I would worry about rats too. My friend Em's daughter keeps rescue chickens, and the other day a huge rat got into their run and tried to kill Nugget  S screamed at it, and Nugget was released almost unharmed, thankfully!

I tried chucking out stale bread for the birds when we moved up here, but they're not interested.

And the bread gets stale the same day, so if I don't use all the loaf, it gets frozen.

I don't eat bread.

I love the crossants from Lidl but they play havoc with my blood sugar levels.

I buy a loaf when my grand-daughter comes. She likes toast for breakfast. Any left is cut into small pieces and thrown onto the lawn.
Birds including robins, sparrows as well as pidgeons come down and eat it.
