Flights should’ve been stopped months ago IMO.

I had an email today from Ryanair saying that they’re planning, providing restrictions are eased, to start flying 1000 flights per day from July 1st. I may be wrong but I couldn’t imagine that the amount of people wanting to fly by then would warrant that amount of flights. I would expect people to be more cautious about being abroad unless their travel is absolutely necessary eg to visit relatives. Being enclosed in a plane is one of the last places I’d want to be.

Have not seen many vapour trails in the clear skies since lockdown. Couls always see several when there were clear skies and hear them flying over before landing at Manchester or Liverpool. Also used to hear small planes going to Blackpool or Barton airfield near Manchester.

We though a friend who checks planes for faults may be made reundant. But as he is very experienced he is still working and travelling abroad to investigate problems and decide what work wants doing.

Our son is now having many video calls instead of travellng abroad. He does work with mobie phones.

Cruiser, I read that they are easing restrictions on private flying. Compton Abbas airfield, local to us, reopened for "maintenance" flights last 17th April and have now posted that they will be allowing leisure flights, including flights from other airfields (not abroad!) sometime next week; all this as authorized by the Civil Aviation Authority. There will not be the number of flights there were before (it's an extremely busy airfield in the summer), it will not be open to the general public for sightseeing, and the well-renowned café will remain closed. They do a good fried breakfast there in that café and it was certainly popular with bikers clubs (of the vintage kind, not Hells Angels) and car rallies, so although there's outside terracing with tables, social distancing would be difficult.

So anyway, you may find Barton and Blackpool airfields following suit …..

Well yes and no - I don't think non essential travel is happening but there are times when it is essential. A friend of a friend has a daughter critically ill in hospital in Australia and they didn't think she'd make it. The friend had to move heaven and earth but she was able to fly out. She was given travel clearance, met at the airport by police and taken straight to the hospital so she could see her daughter for a few minutes in ICU and then taken to a hotel where she will be for 14 days in self isolation - in her room and not allowed out at all.

I know Easyjet were talking about not booking the middle seat for the foreseeable future, so only window and aisle in the hope that will help with the social distancing. And sadly I think there will be enough people who will think that just because flights are flying then it's safe; and maybe it is? But then if countries like Greece are opening up their holiday season then.... the virus thrives in the colder weather, suspect the southern European hot countries will have few few (if any) new cases during the summer months.

Actually from what I gather, planes in a way will be fairly safe as the air con units tend to use high spec filtration so any viral air particles should be trapped before they do much damage. But I'm not 100% how accurate that is. Bet we'll be able to hear your squeal of excitement all the way over here once you get that flight booked xxx
