Wedding rings...

Postby Ally » 09 Apr 2023, 17:37

Following on from Osc's post about her ring I just wondered what your wedding rings/ engagement rings are like.

We didn't get engaged deciding to just get married when we went to Jamaica but was bought a platinum wedding band that I adore.

For my 60th birthday Don bought me (I didn't realise I wanted one till he did  ) a diamond solitaire to match my wedding ring.

Don's wedding ring is a simple gold band.

Michele has mum's engagement and wedding ring and I have dad's.

Both engagement rings were engraved inside with their names and date of engagement.

Dad's wedding ring was quite unusual (certainly for those days) in its shape and his three initials engraved on it. WGT.
I really like it.

I was in Saudi just after the wedding when we were poor so I had a blue sapphire and diamond ring created in 18ct gold for her. Mine was an 18ct gold ring with a blue sapphire in the centre.

We are now divorced but she keeps them both together in her jewellery box. Still friends.

My engagement ring is a white gold diamond solitaire, and my wedding ring is a plain white gold band :)

Like Ally we didnt get engaged, but I also have a platinum wedding ring. It is plain in the middle with a slim pattern round the edges. I usually wear it, but sometimes I wear my mums wedding ring and sometimes my nans I also have my nan's engagement ring and my great grandma's engagement ring, so I mix and match. I cant wear anything except platinum with my wedding ring as platinum is so hard it wears anything else down. We have never been able to afford a platinum ring to go with it. But I did have a white and yellow gold diamond ring for my 40th birthday that I wear sometimes.

Tim had a white gold plain band, that the white gold as worn off so is now pale yellow

Mine's worn out

It was rather thick bevelled edged ring, but that all gone now, it actually cuts into my finger.

And I'm now having to give up, as my eyes are so bad, I really can't see.

I'm inches from the screen too

We got engaged on my 21st birthday in 1970 - Edward was working away from Dublin for the summer, told me to choose a ring, put it aside and he would pay for it when he came to Dublin for my party. My friend and I had a great time going around jewellers in Dublin at lunchtime looking at and trying on rings. I knew the people in the shop where we bought it, so when Edward and I went to get it, they put it on a tray with other rings but he picked out the one I chose! It’s gold with three diamonds mounted diagonally. The ring I referred to yesterday was one he bought me in 1968 which did as an engagement ring until I got the real thing, that one is gold with a Connemara marble stone.

Our wedding rings were matching, gold with a random design cut in - very modern at the time and my mother hated them! Edward’s was made from a bad piece of gold, broke a few times and the design virtually wore out. A good few years ago, a local jewellery designer made a lovely one for him, a sort of criss cross design, but he doesn’t really consider it to be his wedding ring although he wears it on his wedding finger. I also have an eternity ring, diamond and emerald. I only really wear my engagement ring going out as it catches on stuff. I also have my grandmother’s engagement ring which I love but keep for special occasions and wear on my right hand.
