Cruiser, it's good to listen to WM here he knows exactly what you need. My needs are totally different but I do understand yours.
Whilst advice about going to a shop and talking to someone can be good, my experience is that they don't always know what they are talking about themselves. Pressure sales directives force them to push deals at you that you don't need and they work very hard to make you take the current "great thing".
Read what WM has posted and check out what you think is useful. Then, if you wish, you can go to a store and tell them what you are looking for. One thing you will want to know is if your phone is simlocked to a a provider or not. Even if it is, it is a simple matter to get it unlocked but a shop can tell you whether it is and how to get it unlocked.
I agree with WM. Don't let your connection die. Swapping services is the streamlined way of getting the best deal. Let it expire and you are likely to be stuck with whatever anyone is willing to sell you. Whereas they are all geared up to take business from each other if you are still signed up.
If you do decide to talk to someone, tell them what you want. When they offer something get them to explain, showing you the details, how their offer meets what you want. Put them on the back foot and make them explain.
These people hate dealing with me. Especially the rather pushy woman at Vodafone who told me "her" "new" plan was SO much better for me. I told her it was more expensive. She insisted and demanded to know my phone number. I gave it with a smile as she entered it and flipped between the screens. Where she started with "SEE" and finished with "oh it is more expensive".
Always double check. Know what you want and what is offered before you go. Anything which says "initially" or "for the first x months" check out the "later" or "after x months" prices.
Recently my daughter was able to get fibre to her home. TalkTalk sent a big glossy brochure about how "cheap" it could be. I sat down and looked at it, rapidly working out "cheap" was internet only. Once I had added in all her current services, BT turned out to be cheaper.
The devil is in the detail.
