How odd, just had a letter come from HMRC. John opened it as a matter of course without looking at the front but it turns out that it's not for us. It's addressed to our house, everything is correct about that, but it's for someone who has registered for self assessment. I've Googled the unusual name and there's nothing showing up for that name whatsoever.

Jo, HMRC needs to be told, for at least two reasons: It might be someone scamming the tax system, or it might be an admin error and the person concerned could end up going through HMRC Hell due to its mistake.

Been there, done that, and I would not wish it on my worst enemy.

Frank, I'm going to give them a call on Monday. It's an access code for self assessment, one of those peel back things.

Good one kiddo. Some poor sod will be waiting for that and could end up in deep water without it.... and HMRC never, ever, never ever, make mistakes. It is always us.

Frank, you wouldn't believe the rigmarole John had last year with them. Actually you probably would.
He had some changes to be made to his tax code after a new company car and a rise last April. It took them two months and several phone calls to sort that, and then it still didn't look right - in that he wasn't paying enough tax - and it turned out that they'd disregarded his company healthcare and had stopped taxing him on it. We noticed that at the end of June and he called several times each month until they finally started taxing him on it again in December. Every time he called he was told it'd be sorted by the time he got paid the following month.
Total shambles of a department.
