I realised earlier that it's November and we haven't put the heating on yet. It won't be far off though.

Freeloaders :cute: :cute: :cute: :cute: :cute:

Background -there are a couple we know - not well, as we don't really like them - but they stay on the fringes of the people we know. They're Dutch and get invited to bigger events, as Pieter and Antonia know them, because Pieter is Dutch and Ina goes to Antonia's yoga classess.

We asked them here, for dinner, last year, along with Pieter, Antonia, Torkiel. Everyone brought a bottle of wine and Ina and Herrit brought a candle - a home-made candle, but still    We all said, that when Pieter moves just down the road, then we'll do dinners more often. Not us, said Ina - I can't cook and Herrit won't :? Well, okay, fair enough, now we know, you're not invited up here again 8-)

Pieter's birthday, a lovely meal, cooked by him. We all took something, they didn't. Antonia's for some meal or other, ditto. Twice. Pieter's house warming a couple of months ago, she was necking back the gin and tonics, him the beer, as normal. Sat there, without a word for any-one.

Antonia had been into Ourique to get chicken for Herrit, as he doesn't like duck. He ate it all, not a word to any-one. She drank coke, as the wine or beer was paid for, and she doesn't like wine.

We all chipped in, as is normal, for the meal and drinks. Not them.

This is the down-side of living here. Having to put up with people we don't like, as there is only one bar. Not that they go there, unless invited. But their attitude last night really got to me - moaned about this, moaned about that, lack of money, lack of guests in their b & b, hardly surprising really - a short chat with them probably puts people off

Sorry for the moan, but they just really peed me off - not for the first time, but hopefully the last :Hi: :Hi:

people like that really p*ss me off to no end.

I know of a few that are similar, but not quite as bad. They'll leave a restaurant a bit earlier and leave money for their bit, but it often doesn't quite covers it and most certainly will never cover their portion of a tip.

Not sure what the solution is short of actually allocating everyone with something to bring next time you have a party; so you specifically tell them to bring something and not give them a choice. I'd do that just out of spite

As a matter of interest, do either Pieter and Antonia have an issue with them as well or do they just put up and not say anything?

People like that annoy me. John sister is a prime example. She'll suggest somewhere to eat, usually somewhere expensive, and then manage to wheedle out of paying, or paying her fair share. She's 'forgotten' her purse on occasions too.

Jo, What a character!
I'm not surprised you aren't keen on those two Ton, miserable and stingy is not a winning combination!
Something similar happened to me on a works night out at an Italian restaurant. We finished, threw in the cost of our meal plus a tip - and we were just short of paying the bill. How? Because one of our party hadn't chucked any money in. He'd been sitting there hoping that the tip money would cover the cost of his meal!
What a trick.
