Saundra, an old trick used by walkers and campers...

Get a bottle each of lemongrass, eucalyptus and peppermint or citronella essential oils

Put ten drops of each into about 1/3 cup of hot water. Give it a stir and leave to cool then transfer it to a small spray bottle. Give it a shake before use and spray it round the room.

Walkers spray it on hats / caps and exposed parts of arms and legs. Campers soak pieces of sting in the mix then hang them about the place and in their tents.

We can smell smoke

The wind, what there is of it  keeps changing direction. The nearest one to us is in the Algarve, but on the border, so it has to be that. There-s nothing else nearer. I-m monitoring the prociv site every half hour

Jan we do not get much news, but we do know that 43, or more, are dead and that there are over 100 fires from Alentejo up to and including Galicia in Spain.

Some of them are said to have been set by arsonists! I would burn them, very slowly, at the stake.

Stay safe. xxx

I never moan about the heat here....but my gosh it's ROASTING!

We had an early morning walk along the coast and even then it was hitting 30.

We came home and got showered and then nipped out to get the burgers - I could hardly put my hands on the steering wheel and the metal bit of the seat belt was like red hot steel!

Jacob's here now too...we're having lunch outside under the big apple tree as it's the shadiest part of our property.

Apparently the heat is from the back end of hurricane Ophelia, made worse by a very strong Azores high. We could even get into the 30s this far north!
