John's got someone in his dept who is planning to retire in a couple of years so he decided that getting an apprentice would be a good idea.
He contacted a few local colleges who specialise in engineering (and particularly engineering design courses) and Solihull college was the best he found so they advertised the apprenticeship on their website and sent John the CVs that they thought would be the most suitable. They sent six but two weren't exactly what he was looking for so they were discounted and the other four were invited in, by email, for interviews on Wednesday and Thursday this week. Only three replied.
The one on Wednesday went well but neither of the Thursday interviewees showed up! John phoned the lad who'd actually turned up and offered him the job so he's going to think about it.
Funnily enough, John had already worked out that his mother was a girlfriend of John's before he met me, he worked it out from the address as he knew that she now lived opposite to where he used to live, and it also means that I was at school with his uncle. His Mom was a year younger than me and she was a nice girl, her brother was in most of my classes and was a bit up himself though.
Interesting about the personal connections, Jo, just shows it is still a small world.
However, I cannot be the only one who is shocked and dismayed at the attitude of the job seekers, it makes me want to scream! They must know that they have to learn the 'spanners' before they can become the foreman - or do they?
It's a small world like you say jo it's awfull nobody bothers about a job then the person is offered the job and has to think about it I'm shocked hope it's soon sorted
I was reading an article about them and got to wondering..... where are they all?
I can only recall a handful in early Spring, but since then, nothing.
We have had the usual kid's parties out the back, and BBQs, but have never been pestered by them as was the case with other years. It's a bit of a worry.

The lad phoned back on Friday and accepted the job. He starts on Oct 1st. It's really troubled John because he knew who the ideal applicant would be - Joe. He did his work experience there and got to grips with what he had to do very quickly and said it'd be what he wanted to go into, but John's thought about it over and over and came to the conclusion that it wouldn't be fair on either him or Joe to have him working for him.
