Proud of my 2

Parent teacher interviews last night

Missy had settled in really well, (yay as she didn't really settle last year) and is hitting all the targets she's supposed to. Which is fabulous considering her first 2 teachers were pretty rubbish and I question in she learnt anything in school those 2 years. So to hit targets this year is great, as she want getting them last year.

Buddy boy is blowing me away though. I honestly thought at this stage of the year id be starting to look into a Montessori primary (only one is an hours drive away) and start to seriously consider sending him there before his birthday as he did good in the Montessori environment at preschool. I honestly thought he would fail at school due to his behaviour, and Montessori doesn't make you sit on the mat and do as your told (to a degree) they flow through there own tailor made work cycle.

But...

He has the most amazing teacher, who really gets him, gives him space but keeps the leash short iyswim.

He is a year ahead in reading, and maths, writing is on track (he still couldn't hold a pencil 2 terms ago nor hold his body still in a chair which makes fine motor control of a pencil nearly impossible) he's spelling phonetically which means he's hearing the sounds in a word (I've often wondered if he has auditory processing problems, but maybe not?)

So proud, so proud of them both

Weka, that's fantastic! :D

Joe frequently seemed to get poor teachers through primary too. I can only think of two years - Year 3 when he was 7 and Year 6 which was his last year there - when he had really good teachers and he improved no end, it really showed the difference a good teacher can make.

Weka, that is brilliant news all round, but especially for the little ones.

I am a former teacher, but I have always thought that pupils were tagged too early so that the authorities could be seen to be doing something, anything, so full marks for to the teacher(s) for allowing space, time, and a bit of discipline in the form of guidance.

The best part is there's a strong chance Oliver can have his teacher again next year as he is in a year 1&2 class and is only year 1.

Tbh he is where I thought missy would be at the same stage. WM your right, it really shows the effects of good and not so good teachers. I really wished they paid ones more, as they are worth their weight in gold.
