I think there may have been a thread on this before, but I'm being lazy

Do you think it's worth the money buying one of those. My brother has one - not yet used - but from what I figure you still have to spray the window and use a squeedgy thing to wash the window, before using the window vac to suck up any excess? Are they really so much better than good old Mr Muscle Glass cleaner wiped off with a paper towel?

I wouldn't be without mine Ria, hence why I'm waiting for it to charge rather than doing them as you describe All I do is wash the windows with a microfibre cloth and a solution of warm water/washing up liquid and then run the window vac over them, it's takes seconds and the windows are always smear free. There's no need to use a squeedgy as the vac gets all of the water. When mine ran out of charge this morning I did the next one with the solution and then a paper towel and gave up

I was always told not to use wash-up liquid on windows because it leaves an invisible film that actually attracts dirt and dust. Stardrops with ammonia is my cleaner of choice. Other soap-free cleaners are, allegedly, available.

what are stardrops? And daft question - can one buy pure amonia or what do you use?

I was always told that washing up liquid would cut through dirt and grease on windows, it was actually in the cleaning manual supplied by the retail company I used to work for. When I was training in a hair salon though, meths was the window and mirror cleaner of choice there. And as I was training, that was my job....

Ria, I would not think that pure ammonia (crystals) are available, but various strenth solutions are: see Amazon Stardrops is a soap-free detergent with an ammonia solution mixed in and is well suited to windows, and I think it and the vac would work miracles ... something my windows currently need.

Jo, we used meths in the RAF for canopies etc, but it is a bit OTT for house cleaning.

I find my Karcher still leaves smears - there are grooves all along the wiper blade and these seem to show as lines on a cleaned window. I now still use the bottle with the cloth that you get with the machine to clean the window ( a weak solution of washing up liquid) and then use a bathroom squeejee to wipe the soapy water off, drying it with a dry cloth at the bottom of each pane. Much better result!
