We went to a wedding recently, and I was perplexed to learn the bride was to keep her
maiden surname after the marriage. I was informed that this is often done now.

If I send them a Christmas card, do I now have to address it to Mr Smith and Mrs Jones?
Doesn't that sound as though they are 'living in sin'? (Not that that is unusual now).

I expect you will say I'm old fashioned and living in the past. (to be honest, i often wish I was!)

Is there some financial advantage in the bride keeping her maiden name?
Or is it an extension of the 'equality' campaign?

I think women keep their maiden names for all sorts of reasons these days - some professionals prefer to, for business reasons I think. Often couples hyphenate, although it's just as well I didn't seeing as I've been married three times

I find this more common in Europe. In Scandinavia the couple work it out amongst themselves and often the man changes his last name.

For me it's a tradition thing and I have no issue either way. Just as the minister, over for a meal some weeks before the wedding, turned to Mrs S and said "I assume you want the alternative service with Love Honour and Cherish as I know you have no intention of Obeying"...

What if the son of the Smith-Joneses marries the daughter of the Jones-Smiths?

Will she become a Smith-Jones-Jones-Smith or a Jones-Smith-Smith-Jones?

Trust me Aggers - that's nowt to the way they work out surnames (apellidos) here!.

My daughter retained my name, they are both doctors and known as such. I just address joint cards to Sil and of course just use Christian names inside.
