Met an ex work friend off a cruise yesterday and one of the things he told was--in our home town in Somerset there 6 Polish shops no problem with except 1 of them has a sign in the window--NO ENGLISH SERVED HERE !!

Is this not racist?

Yes, of course it is :? If that is true, I'm surprised it hasn't been reported!

We have Polish food sections and Czech in the supermarkets here, and a Polish newspaper on sale. No problem at all, after all in Europe they sell plenty of English papers and magazines - but that sign is racist :? :(

that is just plain wrong on every level.

Only thing I can think of is that they were meant to say that no English is spoken in the shop, ie they cannot serve in the English language?

But then surely someone who is fluent in both languages should have pointed that out to them and fixed it.

Ah that makes sense Ria, maybe that's the answer! As you say though, they should have altered the sign if that's the case  xxx

Because, as far as the local governments and plod are concerned, only indigenous British can be racist and if you want them to apply the law fairly and to everyone, then it's one long uphill slog and they never forgive you for making them do their job.

Nice!!!

It's one of the reasons #1 son is looking for any way out.
