The foods you miss

Postby meriad » 22 Nov 2016, 11:27

It always makes me giggle whenever a friend or family member is coming either from SA or from Germany to here; what we ask them to bring. And vice versa - when we go there, the things they ask us for

From here to Germany for my vist in December: Cheddar Cheese, Ginger Nut biscuits, some things from the South African shop and a jar of pickled onions :D
In return I'll bring back coffee, toiletries, maybe some cold meats. Oh and Tomy Mayonnaise and horseradish remoulade - yum :D

In the past I'd also take over tea, but my sister now has found a shop that sells PG Tips at a really good price so that's no longer required

Isn't it funny the things you miss

Marmite.

Marmite crisps.

Fruit pastilles.

Jelly beans.

Love hearts.

Branston pickle.

Seedless raspberry jam.

Trashy magazines.

Those that visit know what to bring.

Of course I can live very happily without them but what a treat when I do get them. :Hi: :Hi:

Ria, you wouldn't believe the times we've travelled to John's aunt in the US and had large tins of Quality Street (yes, tins in plural) in our bags

Now you mention it I would miss pickle, and of course the extra mature cheddar to go with it :)

When I was stationed in Germany there was not much to take out there as we had the NAAFI stocked with 'normal' stuff, but coming home:

Curry-Gewürzketchup - as you would guess - curry tomato ketchup
Kartoffelsalat - potato salad
Fritessaus - a very creamy Dutch mayo - for chips
Frikadellen - a Dutch herby and spicy sausage

The only thing I can't get in the UK now is the Dutch mayo - I have to make my own.

We've always brought loads of sweets and chocolate back from the US but now it's quite easy to find them over here - even B&M have an American confectionery section and have peanut butter M&Ms, mint M&Ms etc. I can even walk into the Co-op over the main road and get Reese's Cups.
Wish I'd filled a case with coffee nut M&Ms though! First time I'd ever seen them this holiday and never gave it a thought!
