What to buy

We've been invited by Pieter to an afternoon thingy, to celebrate his birthday.

He's Dutch, lives between here and Germany, used to be a classical singer, is also gay, and he's such a lovely bloke, I really think the world of him. As does Grumpy.

Only met him about 6 times, but would like some ideas about what to get him for his birthday.

I've asked Antonia - his bestest mate, but she's in Austria for another week and doesnpt always look at e-mails.

We're a little stuck up here, for decent shops.

Also, he's hoping to move to another house soon, he's in rented at the moment and the other will be too - but bought by another friend, so will be able to put down roots for a long time.

Bit awkward until he moves I would buy him something for the new house or for the garden a plant in a tub perhaps that's if he likes gardening

Buying for men is difficult, buying for gay men even more so!

Champagne?

I agree with JoM

A nice bottle of bubbly is usually acceptable and still shows you're thinking.

A present for the new home is another excuse to get together again.

No need for an excuse when he moves in - Grumpy has already been lined up to sort the kitchen out

it's actually one we looked at a few times. A lady bought it, for 130,000€, had to put a new roof on and sort the pool out and now wants 160,000€

I think we'll go with the plants and champagne.

Plants and champagne - you cannot go wrong with that. Good suggestions

Only other thing I could think of is a nice print / painting of your area; done by a local artist. But art is such a personal thing and can go horrendously wrong unless you have an idea of the person's taste
