Had some horrible news today. My friend Chrisi, who was my Practice Manager at my previous surgery text yesterday to say her husband Alan was in ITU with pneumonia sepsis. Last night there was no change. Another friend who is a GP, has just rung to say they have discovered he has a very very rare heart condition, which is basically a benign tumour in the heart. Because of where it is it stops the heart beating properly and causes a back flow of bacteria which is what caused the sepsis. But the worse thing is bits of this tumour break off and can cause strokes. They were going to transfer him to Oxford to do surgery but his consultant said he wasn't fit enough. Last night Chrisi got called back in as they noticed his pupils were dilated, they did a scan and discovered he had had a massive stroke, caused by this tumour. They did the brain stem tests this morning, which showed no life, but they have to wait 24 hours and test again. If no improved they will switch of his life support. Its completely shocking. He is only in his mid 50's
