I haven't heard them since. Do you know , or can you guess, their purpose?

Don't think I know any apart from Richard like Mm...

Is it notes on a stave then? - awful long time since I read any music!

It's related to the number of sharps in a scale.
1 sharp is in the key of G
2 sharps.........D
3 sharps is......A and so on.
