The coldest May!

The local weather station is at Leeds Bradford Airport, about 3 km as the crow flies, and it says 9ºC feels like 6ºC - wind from the north.

I have the heating on and it is nearly the middle of May. This cannot be right, surely.

It has been really cold so far; and looking at night time temperatures where I am they're struggling to stay above 10 degrees. And my heating has been coming on regularly still... This time last year mom was her for her 80th birthday and we had 10 days of the most glorious hot weather ever; what a difference to this year.

As a by the by.... in Germany (and other parts of Europe) there is the folklore of the Ice Saints (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_Saints ) so basically three more days before you should plant things into the ground and avoid the risk of any late frosts

I don’t mind it being cooler, I’d much rather have that than the heat we had last Summer.

Ria, I remember the Ice Saints from my time in Germany... in 1975 I was at RAF Laarbuch on the Dutch border and we had a late spring, but then we had the most brilliant summer. We can hope, sorry Jo. ;)

Here in the UK we have "Ne'er cast a clowt till May be out". It apparently relates to May (Hawthorne) blossom, and the cooler it is the later it appears - in May (the month). It is struggling this year.

Not any more! Sitting outside of the cafe at Highfield garden centre and it's 18°C! 8-) :Hi: :Hi: Stunning view of the countryside, we're about 5 or 6 miles from the city, going south towards Bristol :)
