Staycations seem to have got very popular over the last few years.
We regularly go to Whitby, and now it's getting very popular indeed. Much more so than it used to be. We've stayed in various places. Cottages on the Mulgrave estate, two places in High Hawsker and one in Runswick.
This October, every Mulgrave cottage is booked up! In October on the East Coast! So is the house in Runswick. The house in Hawsker has four days out of the month left free - for a price of £448!
Which brings us to the second point, cost. The prices have shot up.
Same thing in Northumberland. We stayed a few times at Beadnell on the coast there, at the Beadnell Towers hotel. After being closed for about eighteen months it has reopened as "the best boutique hotel in Northumberland". Rooms starting at £148 per night! And usually above that. £558 for three nights?

I'm sure it's wonderful but blimey O'Reilly.

In contrast we've looked at Salcombe, Devon. Much cheaper. Also much further away, much warmer usually but also well booked up for next year. Like the Mulgrave cottages in Whitby.

I suppose it's good that some money is going to our seaside places but I hope they don't kill the golden goose as it were!

Instead of vacation a staycation is a holiday taken at home or near your home.

I love caravans Saundra.

My mum and dad had a caravan at mablethorp for years loved it my mum used to go for weeks at a time in the 1960/1970

Our neighbours bought a static caravan in Cornwall a couple of years ago and let it out.
They charge £1200 per week through from June until the end of August

Crommers, the UK can be really silly expensive for holidays; esp during school holiday time. I'd love to be able to afford a week away somewhere here in the UK, but flying abroad not only guarantees better weather but also tends to work out cheaper even with flights. It's madness

Absolutely agree Ria, guaranteed weather and usually a lot cheaper.

Such a shame really, it's the reason holidays in traditional seaside locations like ours are in the doldrums. Honestly you can't beat the beaches down here, but the cost is very high and then there's the weather. Fabulous when the sun shines, absolutely dismal on days like today. Not a problem for us retired peeps who live here, we can make the most of the weather when it's good, but holidaymakers have to book ahead for a fixed period, it's pot luck how lucky they'll be. Not much fun if you have small children to amuse.

I agree that prices are crazy - especially in places like Cornwall where I know second homes were being marketed as (say) 6-bed holiday lets in the summer season for nearly £800 a week 20 years ago! The problem seemed to be that standards had to be met, labour had to be remotely employed to maintain the gardens and do the weekly clean/changeover, the marketing agencies take a hefty percentage cut (up to 15% IIRC) as a finder's fee, and then of course it's taxed as a business - quite complex rules had to be met.

Possibly the most cost-effective solution for a short staycation these days is the good old Travelodge!

There's a bit in the papers today saying that more and more folk are buying up old high-sided ex-builder's vans and converting them into very simple mobile holiday homes ….
