Vocal Voices

We found a fab little programme on BBC4 this week, walks in Yorkshire. It's just one lady, out walking at different locations in Yorkshire, with her 360 camera. She chats to people as she bumps into them and there are little snippets of info about the altitude, how far she's walked at various intervals and how far to her destination.

The countryside shots are absolutely stunning, definitely worth a catch up!!

The lady is Shanaz Gulzar and down the years I have done three of the four walks in the series: Runswick Bay to Whitby; Bolton Abbey to Simon's Seat and Leyburn to Bolton Castle.

The walks are all what would be called 'intermediate' and can easily be done in a day. Worth is just for the views.

I saw the Leyburn to Castle Bolton one thid week. Beautiful. And she read a beautiful poem by Charlotte Bronte too, "Pleasure".

They absolutely are!! One of my ambitions is to do a walk to Malham cove, I think the geology is outstanding....I have heard of Simon's Seat but not seen any pictures, it looks a slightly smaller version, and the views are fab!!! Another one to add to the wishlist

Gal, Simon's Seat is made from the same stuff as Malham, but its an outcrop. There's plenty of parking at Bolton Abbey to start and the walk is fairly easy. It can also be got to from Appletreewick via Howgill, which is shorter and steeper and parking can be a problem.

Malham Cove. A nice circular walk of 6 to 7 miles starts in Malham village and takes in Janet's Foss and Gordale Scar waterfalls then across the limestone pavement to the cove and back to Malham. Unlike the Simon's Seat walk, which is fairly easy, you will need sturdy footwear and possibly a walking pole / stick. You would also be advised to take a lightweight windproof poncho, even in summer. It is very open on the tops and it can get a bit blowy without any warning.

If you are a decent walker you could do both over a weekend using Skipton as a base. Drive to Bolton Abbey for Simon's Seat is about 6 miles, and Malham for the cove is about 8 miles.
