Do any of you use / have soup plates. Not bowls, but deep plates / rimmed bowls?


I'm unpacking and putting away (well trying) my various kitchen bits and bobs; and one item is a stack of said soup / pasta plates or rimmed bowls.... whatever you want to call them.

I have regular flat dinner plates as well as smaller side plates. But I also have (what I call) normal pasta bowls and these soup plates. The regular bowls I use a lot, but I cannot remember the last time I used one of the plate things. Thinking it's going to be another item to add to my list of sell / donate/ rehome to a friend


But it did make me think - are these soup plates / rimmed bowls a thing of the past. Most people I know are like me, regular plate, side plate and regular bowl

We generally have our soup in mugs Ria I do know the kind of plates you mean, but haven't seen them for years Our pasta bowls get quite a lot of use though

Think most people use small bowls these day ria
Altho I use soup plate at times as they are easy to handle for a casserole or stew they are all part of a willow pattern set of had a good 40years

I have them and agree with Saundra that they are also much better than a plate for casseroles and stews. My deep bowls are now cereal bowls.

- I use the pasta bowls for stews as well (you fit more in )

We've got many different varieties of bowls ranging from Royal Worcester Evesham (easily 40 years old now, a marriage gift) and Portmerion to just plain white Asda which you can use in a microwave, and several small chunky bowls that Waitrose sold posh pate in one Christmas, which we kept and have found very versatile!

But thinking about it, I don't think we've ever had soup bowls as such ......

When it comes to tinned baked beans, spag bol, macaroni cheese, ravioli, so on, I'm afraid I tend to eat them straight out of the glass Pyrex bowl I've microwaved them up in
Saves on the washing up ....

If we lived nearer I would take some off you. Have not seen them for sale recently.
When I was yuong when the travelling fair used to come, thre were also stalls selling crockery many of them bone china. You could get a full set of six items of each including tea and coffee pots for under £20.00. They use to do a brisk trade. Other stalls sold other household items such as rugs.
I use a bowl when I have soup.
Went to a wedding a few years ago where the soup was served in one of the soupbowls with a rim. The soup hardly covered the bottom. Two spoonfulls
and the bowl was empty. This was at a posh hotel. £70.00 per person. Glad I wasn't paying. Meal probably only cost £5.00.
