So much stuff that's out of date

I'm sorting the last of the stuff that needs to go back into cupboards - all the tins and jars of 'stuff' that I had. At lest 90% of it is past its "Best Before" date; so now trying to be realistic between what really will be past its best before and what would still keep a bit longer given that the dates are more health and safety regulations than common sense :? :D

I mean a jar of pitted olives - best before December 2019.... surely they'd still be fine. Never opened and always stored in a dark cool place?

Are you a pedantic "best before" observer or do you wing it?

that's exactly what I'm thinking.... Some things just do have to go; but for most of it; I'm just going to open things as and when I need them and if not OK anymore I'll come up with plan B :D

I wing it .... and then some, especially with unopened stuff. And if they can defrost a Mammoth from the permafrost after thousands of years without a problem then those spring rolls I made last year will be fine.

My plan B is the bin. ;)

If I tell you that a week ago, I opened a packet of Dextro Energy tablets (orange and Vitamin C) with a best before or use by date (not made clear) of 10/2016 ......

I'm chomping my way through them. Chomp being the operative word as they are rock solid.

Largely we tend to turn a blind eye to best before dates, but if we have, (example), a bottle of olive oil, nearly finished, which is now a year out of date, Mrs O has no compunction about ditching it.

Shell!!!

I have a squeezy bottle of clear honey that is now rock solid but after a few seconds in the micronuke it runs again. It says 05/17 on the back so I take that as it being mainly for use at breakfast. :)

See this is what i don't get --there were none of these dates in the late 40's through the 50's & 60's and my Mother didn't have a fridge until well into the 60's but we SURVIVED !
Dates were invented as a means of making people buy more

A piece of meat was offered to our dog , if he wouldn't eat it neither did we.
Majority of veg came from our garden
