Jobs

Just thought I'd share,

I applied for a job last week and, unexpectedly, I got a phone call. Apparently they did the usual, punted all the people who had been doing exactly that job with reams of certifications. All of them were rejected.

My CV was sent in on Monday and I was told I'd have some news about a Friday interview on Tuesday or by end Wednesday. I got a call late on Tuesday evening telling me I had an interview at 10:30 on Wednesday morning.

They interviewed another person on Thursday and I received a call about 1 hour later to say I had won the job.

This was a surprise to me because at least half the work is not my core stuff, yes I can do it but it is hard to articulate well.

The agency then asked me to return the signed contract by 7pm. We had guests on Thursday and I had to abandon them and read a 9 page dense legal contract and sign it.

The job is based in Berlin but home working for the rest of this year at least.

Well it is a job and the next 8 months are assured. I have to get my head into working mode, our first guests arrive 2 days after I start and I have lost 3 days of fitting out a temp bedroom and bathroom for us if we have overflow.

However it is a job I did not expect until Jan at the least and I am very grateful for it.

So if I mention something about working on the news board, you know what happened.

Well done, Suff, I hope it works well for you. :D

My next door neighbour, who is an IT contractor / troubleshooter, has just been laid off ..... he seems fairly laid back about it, but I do wonder what his chances are in the current climate. :|

Thanks for the wishes all.

Ossie, I was surprised because I am seeing less than 10% of the normal flow of jobs at this time. Granted it is holiday season, but there seems to be no real difference in July, there was less than 10% in May and June too. Your neighbour might find it more difficult than he thinks.

I thought that I would be out of a job till Jan earliest.

I'm just lucky a job turned up which I have very special skills for. EU/Commonwealth, International, M&A, in an environment which is stressed for people to get the job done.

I have been applying since mid Jan when I knew I would probably have to leave Tesco. Second phone call, first interview, job. It doesn't always work that way even though my record is pretty good. 25 years, contracts from 6 months to 12 months usually, 5 interviews that didn't turn into jobs.

Outcome right now is I am about to wire in some new lights and electrics at 11pm...

Congrats, Suff, contracting is not the easy street many think it is, but WFH is better than not working from anywhere - or so some say.
