Eating out

Mrs O and I had been thinking about tentatively putting our feet in the waters, following the easing of the last lockdown, and resuming popping out for a breakfast at the garden centre or the local cafe.

Then we saw the prices on the menus. They've gone up, I reckon, by a good 25%.

Having got out of the habit of eating out, we're now not sure we want to restart. £25 for a simple breakfast with coffee for two simply isn't value for money in our book ......

What are your thoughts on it?

We haven’t eaten out yet, apart from coffee and cake in Birmingham and the prices hadn’t changed there.

That’s a lot though. I suppose that there’s the argument that they’ve been hit hard with lockdowns but then a lot of their customers will have also taken a financial hit in the last year and won’t be able to stretch to higher prices.

That is a bit steep Ossie. We wouldn't expect to pay more than £7.99 each for a breakfast and coffee in a decent place, a lot less in one of the cafes at the harbour.

We eat out a lot Ossie and haven't seen any price changes.

That's expensive for a breakfast round your neck of the woods. :o

I don't eat out.

I sometimes have a coffee and a piece of carrot cake when I am in town. It is a lovely little cafe.
The price is still the same, I ge change from a five pound note.
The pice of apples in Tesco have shot up. They were £2.70 per kilo, now £3.75 per kilo for the same apples. Will not buy them at that price.

The next time I eat out will probably be for my birthday in November

 Blimey Ossie! We've only had brunch out so far - roughly a fiver per person for coffee/tea and a lovely panini :D

That sounds rather a lot Ossie, I'd give a miss.

We are thinking of going out for our anniversary later this month. But only thinking. I'm sure I'll still cook

The prices at the two outlets I referred to above are: £9.50 / £9.95 for a Full English breakfast and £3 at both for a large Americano (or £2.60 / £2.70 for a regular).

Mrs O usually has a smaller breakfast, but Ossie usually has a side order of extra mushrooms or hash browns with his, so you can see where I'm coming from when I say little change from £25 for the two of us ...

There's a piece in the Daily Mail online at the moment about a Yorkshireman who went to London and got rooked £54 for 4 portions of fish 'n chips. That's £13.50 a portion!

I aw that Ossie and then it made me think.

We last went to England about 10 years ago and were gobsmacked that our normal fish and chips had doubled in price, from under five pounds to 10 pounds 10 pence. And as I didn't have any change - we'd arrived that day - she let me off the 10p
