Smart Meters

Have had an email from my energy supplier to say they want to change my gas meter. It will be replaced by a new Smart meter.
I have replied that I do not want a Smart meter. They have replied that the Smart meter will be fitted but it will be disabled so that it will not send readings.
I will still have to send monthly readings as I am doing now.
Anybody else been asked to do this. It will also apply to the electricity meter.

Yes, Cruiser, from E.on.
They've been sending me emails twice a week, asking me to book for an electricity smart meter. I ignore them. They supply me with gas as well but on a separate account; they haven't twigged yet I'm a dual user.
I'm actually a bit sceptical that a smart meter will "work" in our house, in the sense that the garage lies between the meters (on the outside wall) and the kitchen, which is where they would have to put the display inside the house, and I believe it may be too far "remote" to connect. Quite happy to be corrected on this.
I'm also quite happy reading the meters once a month and giving them the readings online - it's a useful discipline. I then get the monthly bills online often within a few hours.
Of course, if you want to price-fix your tariff, a smart meter seems to be compulsory these days. I'm quite happy with standard variable for now.

This is what I was saying a while back.
My meters will be replaced on the 23rd and go from pre-pay to tariff and monthly DD. Apparently the mode can be changed remotely at any time but all new installations are now smart metres.
I have given up caring. I'll just go online every month and stump up what I owe. What I will not be doing is monitoring every socket every hour of the day to see what power I am drawing. If the remote reader is a mobile device. like the one for the CH boiler, it will go in a drawer and be forgotten about.

We're with Eon too Ossie. They e-mail regularly and have even phoned, but we've said we don't want one.
Cruiser they can't force you to have one if you don't want it, that position might change but currently it's up to you.
