You couldn't make it up

Have been speaking to a man who lives at the top of the crescent. He is the son of the originalowner who died several years ago.
The son is now in his early 70s. He has now had gas installed to the house as it was not fitted when the houses were first built in 1960.
He has paid for the gas supply to be connected from the road to the house and has got estimates for the installation of gas central
heating.
But he cannot have it installed as the gas supplying companies will not install a gas meter. They say the cost of buying gas is a lot higher
than they can sell it to him. So he is still having to rely on electric heating which is more expensive.

Why would they install the supply and then not hook up? Sounds like taking money under false pretences.

Citizen's Advice or similar to help?

They can refuse to connect a new property but they cannot refuse to supply an already connected property.

Gas. Went up 10x on the wholesale market but price caps mean they sell, sometimes, at a loss.

I can see why a supply company, on the verge of bankruptcy, would not want to make the situation any worse.

I doubt that citizens advice would be able to help. It is unlikely that the government could force a company to make itself even more insolvent by taking on new customers.

This may drive heat pumps even further than they are today.
