How does this work?

The Co-op has Coke, Pepsi, Dr Pepper etc. at £2.20 per bottle, but get two for £3.00 or £1.50 per bottle. They 'lose' 70p per bottle if I buy two at the same time.

Why not sell singles for £1.55 like Asda? There must be some good mark-up on pop, eh?

It's all down to the volume sales, isn't it?

Iceland are selling virtually everything on a 4 for the price of 3 basis these days.

It doesn't help the obesity epidemic one iota! These deals are always on junk food or sugary drinks :cute:

Yes, try and get a BOGOF on apples, pears, bananas, spuds or tomatoes.

Crisps, sweeties, chockies - no problem.

Mrs S tells me the highest profit in a pub is on the soft drinks out of the mixer. Astronomical margins.

These deals are designed to gain market share. They all do it to maximise the monthly sales figures. It is not the profit that is looked at. At least not at first. It is the volume sold. Sell more volume and the company will discount every bottle you sell on the next order.

Counter intuitive. But that is how it works.

Actually, Frank next time you're in the shop have a look if the deals are across the range or for diet drinks only. It's actually getting harder and harder to find what I call 'full-fat' drinks, ie natural sugar vs artificial sweetner. And let me tell you, I'd rather be putting natural sugars into my body than chemical sweeteners ;-)

That's me to a T, Ria. All the drinks now appear to be 'diet', 'low sugar' or 'zero sugar'. Even the fruit squashes that claim 50% juice are now laden with chemicals. Where is the choice?

We dont allow Luke to have artificial sweeteners, and the team say it is almost impossible to find natural sugars.

If you look closely it tends to be high fructose corn syrup.

If you have a spare hour and a half, this video from the University of California is well worth watching.
