Facebook help

Can I ask you Facebook users something?

A few years ago, the local Town Facebook group got so large that FB sort of forced the admins into making it a "private" rather than a "public" group, otherwise they'd have to have all sorts of restrictions.

So against my better judgement, I decided to register for FB so I could keep up to date with town happenings. I don't post on it (well, twice in two years) and I occassionally "like" the odd post. But recently, I've started getting inundated with emails and notifications from FB with "friend suggestions". Now I have no idea who these names are (I don't recognise them from the Town group postings), why they are being touted, or whether or not it's some sort of a scam.

Is it possible to turn off these "friend suggestions" in any way?

Cheers!

Don't know, Ossie, but your experience is why I "left" years ago. I didn't actually leave as FB it wouldn't let me. I tried to close my account but I am apparently still 'visible'.

So, this is what I did. I went online and into the email account I registered with FB - let's say gmail. I then created a rule to send all FB messages to spam or trash. I now get nothing, but if I was really desperate (I never am) I could open FB and read.

The ideal world.

I belong to quite a few groups Ossie, but I don't see many friends suggestions unless I actually look for them. Tbh I ignore them anyway.
I do get regular requests on messenger and Insta though, usually saying they are American and wish to get to know me. Those I block.
My profile is set to private so I'm guessing they just scroll looking for pictures of women of a certain age hoping they are vulnerable or desperate lol

Thanks folks, that's all useful info. Yes, Jen, I have been ignoring them too, but they're coming up two or three times a week now.

I'll have a play around with the "notifications" settings, see if I can find some sort of blocking solution there.

It's an Outlook account, WM, I'll see if marking them all as Junk starts permanently redirecting them to that folder ......

As time rolls on I have found that I need three email addresses in order to access things. One has to be @gmail.com, another @live.co.uk (Microsoft) and one unconnected to either for private and official use - family, friends, NHS, Council, GP etc.

All of this is because I more frequently find that I need to sign in to some sites with a Google or Microsoft account, or create a new one, in order to simply read an article etc. so I just walk on by and find an alternative.

I also use a secure search engine, Startpage, to avoid Google and its avalanche of ads and harvesting of personal info. For the same reason I avoid its Chrome browser.

Good luck with your endeavours, Ossie.
