Energy standing charges - let your views be known.

They are the biggest rip-off in years and cost each customer more than £300 per year.

Ofgem want to hear from you but you only have today (Friday) left to do so. You can do this by emailing StandingCharges@ofgem.gov.uk or by calling 020 7901 1000 to give your views by 19 January 2024. There is no online form.

I had my say.

WM,
Have sent a message saying I object to the high standing charge.

Interesting and thanks for flagging this.

I get why there are standing charges, but the % increase is eye watering!

https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/sites/default/ ... 0Input.pdf makes for some interesting reading; the tables on pages 28 and 29 compare the charges per supplier / region for electricity and gas and show the increase between 2021 and now; and then page 32 onwards - saying that costs will go up even more!

Thanks Ria, those figures are why we should all be contacting Ofgem.

From the 1st Jan my standing charges per day are gas = 35p and elec = 58p. This time in Oct 2022 they were 21p and 27p respectively.

My electricity is 47.56p and gas is 29.60; so quite a bit cheaper than you Frank. I was on a fixed rate until September so whilst on that the standing charges were electricity at 22.893p and gas at 24.879p - so the electricity has gone up silly amounts!

The charges vary by region and supplier, but there is a cap. Most go with the cap.

The more than doubling most of us are seeing with the electricity SCs are to cover the chancer suppliers going bust - Bulb etc. - and the likes of EoN, EDF, Scot Power having to take on their equally 'chancer' customers.

Why us regular users have to pick up the tab is beyond me.

It's similar to the £16 levy we all face to cover the debts of those who can't or will not pay.

Why Yorkshire, which is nearer the 'free' electricity from windmills and the gas fields pays more is a mystery.

This is all part of net zero.

The government wants lower emissions.
How do you make sure people put less emissions out? By making them use less fossil fuels; and how do you do that? By putting the price of fossil fuels up so people can't afford to use as much of them.
QED.

So, email, complain, the option is there. Use it FFS! We all should, but we won't. It's so much easier to be compliant. QED.

When the charges go up, and they will, we'll all bitch and moan, but, but but... and pay.

You all could have had your say but gave it up. Pay up and suck it up.
