Off, on, off, on, off...

It started during the night and is still going on and Northern Powergrid have no idea why. All they can say is that 56 homes are affected and fuses in the sub-station keep blowing. Nearly eight hours of no electricity thus far. with a few hours of it being on here and there.

I suspect that with all the rain we have had, especially in the last few weeks, that water has got into the cable trenches.

Oh heck!

Something is shorting but it will take them time to work it out. The engineers will be on site testing cables to find the distance down the cable the short happens.

It went off again just after I posted.

The water table is very high here - boggy ground - that's why the name of the area is Adel, an Olde Englishe word for 'addled', hence Adel lands.

This also happened a few years ago and new cables were put in and a nearby culvert was cleared out. It has never been done since so the problem is back.

At about 5;15 a technician knocked for cars to be removed, the location had been found, as per Suff's explanation, and the digger got to work. They had tracked the short and were doing a repair. It was noisy but we should now be back to normal - sometime.

Thankfully my laptop has a long life battery and I have a TV dongle, so I was not without entertainment as long as I avoided Beeb1 and 2, ITV, C4 & 5. T.G for Freeview.

There was a spell of powercuts in our village a couple of years ago and it turned out to be squirrels chewing through cables.

And I spoke too soon.... it went off again, hence my photo at 1 in the morning!.

They were there till 4 AM but it's all finished now... allegedly.

We found with our power that if it just went off that was OK. But if it went on, off, on, off, on, off, then there was something ominous and it took them hours to fix it.

They came and dug the road up about 6 times a couple of years ago but finally managed to sort it. This year they came down the road laying in a brand new main feed trunking, no cable but they will have pulled that later.

Things have been a bit more stable since. Apparently they are going to remove the high cables over the road and dig up the pavements and do the feed up from below.

Meanwhile for the pellet burner I bought a transfer switch. It flips between mains and a battery driven inverter. although I have the batteries, charger and inverter, I've never found the time to install it. So still at the mercy of the mains.
