This is true.

It's a tad frustrating for me because it would take about 35 seconds to enable and then a few times to tune....

The technology is there. If we want to use it,

about feeds

Be honest Suff--how many of us would use "feeds"?
In fact how many of us even know what it means--i for one don`t.
Don`t get too technical --this is a friendly little forum full of lovely people not

Actually Lissie, it was a simple request to check two items in the control panel now we are on a version of phpBBS which supports it.

Apart form one small icon it's invisible to everyone else and then those of us who would like to use it can use it.

What you are saying to me is "no you can't have that feature because we don't understand it and probably wouldn't want it if it was enabled".

What I'm saying is "Please do one small action to make this board easier for me to use and more friendly for me"

You see how it looks form my side?

I've read through this thread twice and I'm still no wiser, but I can now see the meaning of the old adage "Ignorance is Bliss"

Modern technology can be a bit of a pain at times - give me good old differential calculus any time.

In the absence of a feedback board I put this request here.

In short you use a browser to connect to VV and open the forums and read the posts.

With feeds, the posts are put in a place where a client like an email client can read the posts and "pull" them (read the feed), into the client.

So just like you use your email to get your mail from your ISP mailbox, when a phpBB like VV is enabled for feeds, it is possible to download and read the posts offline. If it's implemented properly, it's also possible to reply to the posts from the feed reader without ever opening VV with a browser.

It is like the difference between using a mail client, like Outlook, to have your mail local on your machine and reading your mail online with a browser a.k.a googlemail or yahoo mail or Hotmail.

Hopefully that is simple enough? It is a fairly simple concept.

Suff I'm sorry but I really do not want to tweak this new board more than I have to, not if the majority aren't interested....................... :?

I will show your request to Mick, that's all I can say right now.................

Honestly I'm not fussed Kaz, don't stress.

I just asked which caused a cascade of questions. I understand the need to not change anything. However as a specialist in migrations for the last 12 years I also understand that there is an opportunistic window during the time of change.

Don't worry about it.

I tried to find some simple web pages which explain feeds but they descend into jargon and uber geekese in seconds. If you don't know the terminology you'll never keep up. Totally bizarre for such an incredibly simple technology.

If you go back to 2003 the IT world was claiming that in 5 years our lives would be driven entirely by feeds. 10 years later and it probably is, but not in the way they expected. Twitter is an outgrowth of feeds. The Facebook app on a phone is another example of feed technology taken and used.

Most people who use Web 2.0 today (Facebook, twitter, flickr, Google+, Advanced forums), have absolutely no idea of the feed technology which underlies it. Perhaps that is how it needs to be before the vast majority of people will accept it.

Kaz. Just leave it for now and if you feel you want to do this later on, drop me a PM. I've asked, I've explained and now I'm going to leave it alone.
