As I expected, there would be some move to try and keep the people of the UK with access to the EU.
This move is quite interesting because should they approve it, then two things will be clear.
1. That the EU is a country in which the member states reside
2. May will be left with no alternative but to allow all EU citizens, currently resident in the UK at the date of separation, with the right to remain.
Passing this in the EU parliament and giving the people of the UK the right to decide if they will be only UK citizens or will be EU and UK citizens is quite a shrewd move. Because it takes the wind out of the sails of May who demands that UK citizens in the EU have the right to remain before she will enshrine the same rights for EU citizens in the UK.
Personally I have real issues with Leave politicians who believe this is a bad thing. In fact it's really a good thing because those who want to remain part of the EU have the right. Of course those who don't will not have the right and anyone born after the split will also not have the right.
It is quite a shrewd move because it will also create pressure in the UK by dividing the country. Those with full access to the EU will be considered more "entitled" than those without. How many Leave voters will take this up, should it be passed. Personally I would take it. You might call me a hypocrite but actually I'm not. I have said all along that leaving is the right thing for the UK to do, no matter the cost to me personally. If the EU wants to reduce the cost to me personally, then I'm going to see that as a bonus in which I get to free my country from what I see as an ever encroaching and smothering blanket whilst being able to arrange my life and exit the EU cleanly without sudden severing of ties.
Personally I feel this is one of the most democratic things the EU has tried in its entire history. Which probably means it will be voted down. To try and decry this as some cynical attempt to divide the country is to make yourself visible as a political manipulator who is determined to use the people at whatever ruinous cost to the people for personal gain and self aggrandisement.
What does it matter if half the people of the UK are EU citizens, or even 3/4. In 3 generations almost nobody in the UK will be one, unless they choose to leave the UK and it will have smoothed the transition very easily.
These politicians need to think before they speak.
