Cycling on the footpath.

I see that the police have decided to let cyclists use pedestrian footpaths, in spite of the fact that it is against the law.
I was under the impression that laws in this country were passed by Parliament, and the police's job was to enforce them.

From the cyclists' point of view I can see the point, but, surely, the correct procedure would be to get Parliament to make
a decision on the matter. Why are the police allowed to make discretionary decisions on what laws they uphold?
This, surely, is not the way to operate? Somebody wants to be put in their place, me thinks.

Could we perhaps ask the Police to let pedestrians have the right of way on roads and streets in towns?
That would make more sense.(I'm only joking - to make a point}

I think they make it up to suit themselves and that we are always in the wrong.

The people at the top of the Police these days are cut from the same cloth as politicians. They enforce some laws and don't bother about others.

As I understand things every police officer has a bit of choice on how to deal with each case on merit, providing it is a misdemeanour and not a directly arrestable offence. Some cycling on pavements will get nothing more than a warning and an instruction not to do it again whereas others will require an arrest.

Having said that I am against senior police officers issuing blanket instructions. That job belongs to parliament.
