EU summit in Malta

Postby Suff » 03 Feb 2017, 20:17

Listening to the statements coming from the EU leaders, today, sort of rang a bell with me. I rummaged around in my mind and came up with it.

Frank from Some Mothers do Ave Em saying "Every day in every way I get better and better"....

Really, it was pitiful. The guarantor of their security and all they can do is rip into him because he's saying things they don't like.

If they were real people they would have made an agreement to spend the tens of trillions of € to create their own nuclear deterrent, agreed to spend more tens of trillions of € to create, train and equip an army large enough to protect their borders. Then they could stand tall as an EU nation and call the shots.

What did I hear?

Betty!

I thought Valetta's Grand Harbour looked grand indeed.

France has historically had a problem with the USA, going back to De Gaulle at least. They can moan and groan all they want but I reckon Trump's support for NATO depends on European nations actually paying their fair share into it, instead of assuming that the US will protect them forever, for free.

Interesting. I've known most of my adult life that De Gaulle nursed a grudge against the UK for "offenses" against France.

However in a book review of the book The almost impossible Ally, I found this:

Part of his justification for the rebuttal of Britain was Macmillan’s failure systematically to propose defence arrangements that would consolidate Europe against the United States

That about sums it up for me. De Gaulle wanted power for France and wanted the UK to help him facilitate that. He wanted to "put the US in it's place" with EU power.

In the end it has all come full circle. The UK relationship with the US has never been broken. France got it's power but gave up it's soul to the EU and the EU are barking around the legs of their protector in some fanciful act of self harm with their wounded pride standing out all over.

Putin must be rolling with laughter at the yapping little curs.

Interestingly I found a post about why De Gaulle was so difficult after the war. There was a litany of slights and doing down France. Then a question followed.

"Did DeGaulle harbour a similar disdain for W. Germany after the war???"

And that, sadly, is the relationship of the UK and the US to the EU to this very day....
