Have got this from an American friend. The prices are in dollars but can be compared to the UK.

Think petrol is expensive?
A can of Red Bull--250ml for $2.95....$11.80 per litre

Robitussin Cough Mixture-200ml-$2.95...$49.75 per litre

L'Oreal Revitalift Day Cream-50ml-$29.95--$599 per litre

Bundy Rum-1250-$51.00--$40.80 per litre

Visene Eye Drops-15ml-$5.69--$379.00 per litre

Britiny Spears Fanatsy Perfume--50ml-$29.00--$580 per litre

And if you are thirsty--Evian Water-$375ml-$2.95--$7.86 per litre for bottled water.

And if you calculate th cost of inks for your printer it could be $2500.00 per litre.

So next time you fill up with petrol, just think how cheap it is compared to other products you may buy!!!

I knew printer inks were expensive, but that is taking the pi55.

Looks very impressive. But you have to calculate how many litres you use per year.

If you do 7,000 miles a year and your vehicle does 50mpg then you use around 635 litres a year.

In comparison, if you use a litre of printer ink in a decade I'd be surprised. These things always look good when they are written but you have to work out the Apples v Apples comparison.

In this case the list below is more like Apples v Aliens from space. Something I find happens in the climate debate a lot.

Petrol is created by the fractional distillation of oil. Diesel also but diesel comes out at the first distillation, petrol takes one or more additional distillations. Oil comes out of the ground in volume and is usually counted in 100 gallon barrels.

Printer Ink on the other hand is rather more complicated. Printer ink for modern inkjet printers also has to contain compounds that stop it from clogging and also stabilise it during the spraying process.

Oil also has a huge market and economies of scale come into play.

On a more amusing note, I do wonder how you would get on drinking 600 litres of Red Bull a year...

Oh and Mrs S drives around 30,000 miles a year and her car does around 32mpg. Over £4,000 per year in Diesel. Fortunately we buy most of our Diesel in France which saves us £400 to £600 per year.
