I have just been reading about a couple of fiancees who still live with their parents in order to save up for a house. It is now apparently "all the rage" with young couples wanting to get on the housing ladder. Well blow me down!

I seem to remember it being the only way to go for those of us not from the "I want it NOW or YESTERDAY generation'. It is exactly what my wife to be and I, as well as all our family and friends, did in the days before cheap money and instant credit for everything.

Maybe "putting the (financial) clocks back" might help these people with their future finances and could see them living a life without being crippled with constant, and rising, debts. "Save now, buy later" could / should become the new buzz phrase.

Couldn't agree more, but I think the "younger generation", in these very uncertain times, have absolutely no incentive to save these days. The "enjoy life now because tomorrow will be too late" philosophy.

Is it incentive or desire or something else?

With all the shut-downs, strikes, high interest rates, the Cold War and other troubles there was not much incentive for those of us growing up in the '60s and '70s, was there?

Fortunately our 'thrift' and 'save' genes, handed down from previous generations, were still working as was our desire to put the effort in and 'get on'. Then came the '80s and '90s and Yuppies and Loadsamoney and it has been downhill ever since.

Our lot ushered in the second lot and they in turn ushered in today's lot. I don't see any going back any time soon.
