Two things spring to mind here. The first is the EU, for all its good intentions as the peacekeeper in Europe, it has been very slow off the starting blocks to respond to the crisis in Ukraine. Actions speak louder than words, and self-interest amongst some member states have enfeebled the EU and weakened any attempt at a concerted effort. Thankfully there now seems to be a united front amongst the 27 nations.

The second thing is that love of one's country has been sneered at and gradually held to ridicule by luvvies and lefties as though it is something to be ashamed of. Why do they disparage their own country when it should be valued and cherished? Now with Ukraine, we see love of one's country, one's land, one's freedom, in all its glory, as something precious and not to be given up lightly - something which is worth fighting for.

You cannot transition a gaggle of proud nation states with a strong sense of country into a united superstate. First you must break the sense of country and tie it to something larger.

It takes decades to centuries.

Whilst there is no outside physical threat, this is quite achievable.

However when an outside threat comes up, the fractured nature of the whole is exposed.

The US works because no matter how fractious and squabbling they may be internally, externally they are united. This is not so for the EU where they are fractious and squabbling internally and in the way they face the world. The transition is not complete and until it is (if it ever is), these divisions will remain.

For those with a modicum of memory, the EU has threatened to sanction Greece, Poland and Hungary more than it is sanctioning Russia right now.

Which tells you where their priorities lie.
There are 10 types of people in the world:
Those who understand Binary and those who do not.
