Yes, it is wrong for those in the know to us insider knowledge to place bets on anything not open to the public. It matters not the subject nor the institution / business involved, it is illegal and they should be punished - by the law.

Such is the case with the bets on the GE date.

Those involved should be punished and the bookies have all the information needed to identify who made the bets, where and when. Some of them will be associates of MPs and government / opposition officers. Many will have never placed a bet in their lives before now. All will be easy to find so go get them, throw the book....

However, the media is making a huge mountain out of a molehill when it comes to the effect these bets will have on the GE. It will be minimal, if that.

Why is it that something like this gets national coverage?

Surely a person is innocent until proved guilty. If they dcide to admit their guilt that is a different matter.

And why does it take so long to investigate these simple acts

Someone has obviously had inside knowledge and tried to make a few quid.
Stupid behaviour which will hopefully see them punished.
No, it won't make any ifference to the outcome of the election. That was decided a long time ago.

It will make zero difference to the outcome of the election. I would have thought that a GE would provide enough grist for the mill but apparently the lazy days of Covid reporting have settled in and they don't want to go back to hard work.... It seems that Impalement by the press and media is the new blood sport.
