The law ties itself up in knots sometimes. I know the issue of children is a thorny one and a difficult issue.
But Venables has served his sentence, however unsatisfactory some people (including yours truly) think that sentence was.
To some degree the leniency of the sentence has promoted the desire to unmask him now, imo.

He did his time for the murder of James Bulger but he was recently sentenced to two years(I think this is correct) for having and distributing pornographic photos of children as young as 2- therefore, imo, he still remains a danger to children.

To come back to another point;

I don't think any child abuser or rapist who has been released from prison should be allowed any sort of anonymity.

Sorry, I can't really agree with those sentiments. If you've done your bird, you should be given a chance to move on in life.

Perhaps so but it looks as if Venables could be a repeat offender against children-should we give constant anonymity?

Also any other prisoner does his time, comes out and has to live on with the same identity. I understand that Venables had to be given a new identity the first time round but should the taxpayer keep having to pay out for him to be relocated, given a new name and a new history?

Kaz can you link me to the info re these photos being fake...I'd like to see how it ties in with the facebook page and the info on it that was said to be Venables.

Shaz I'm sorry - I think the friend who shared the status must have decided better of it, as the status where that was being said has been removed :? There is talk elsewhere on FB saying that it had been on the radio that it was illegal to share these on twitter - so maybe she decided to pull her status about it!

No probs, Kaz. Tbh, I wasn't sure of the legalities which is why I didn't link to the photos or put the alleged new name on here.

Yes, on reflection I agree with you Cromwell. That's the point isn't it, that most people think the original sentence was too lenient, but as you say, it's done.

In my opinion the judicial system is crooked, lawyers protect each other and are more inclined to protect the offender than those who have suffered at the hands of these perverts, crooks and criminals..
I would never employ a solicitor in a town where I had a legal problem with another solicitor, they work hand in glove, and their fees are out of all proportion, and as for the lying they will resort to to win a case in their line of duty is beyond belief!!. I do not have any involvement with solicitors, but I know an individual who does.. Thankfully he has a lawyer in London who is acting for him.. He is a decent fellow having given up local lawyers who proved to be no more than a money box soaking him to the limit, these are lawyers who work hand in glove with each other.
People who have committed crime should pay dearly for their crimes, we had 2,000 the tip of the iceberg, individuals who entered UK from eastern european countries, the organisers "foreigners" including Albanian made £20 million from arranging sham marriages, letting in dangerous criminals, Albanian gangs, rapists murderers money launderers etc and the like in for a hefty fee...Now tell me what their sentences will be along with this sanctuary they can be assured of when their sentence is completed called Britain, that is open house to criminals.. As for murder with intent, I still believe in the death penalty not by the rope, but by the supposedly humane "Pathway" (about as humane as those administering it) or a nice relaxing injection to help them on their way.

It appears that the decision to give Thompson and Venables secret identities on their release was influenced by what happened to another child, child killer, Mary Bell.

She had great difficulty in making the transition of being institutionalised for twelve years to being free. She was also hounded by the press and public.

Of course, had the three of them been incarcerated for the length of time many of us would have found more appropriate, given their crimes, we might not be having the discussion in this thread.

I felt deeply uncomfortable at those photos on FB yesterday, but wasn't strong enough to say so  Oldyeller finally was the one strong enough to come out and say it was wrong yesterday evening. I'd like to think that someone will track down the webmaster and apply the law, but I don't suppose anyone will  Whether people like it or not, he has served the sentence served on him by the law, and if he reoffends, the law should be enforced again. If you move away from the law, however flawed it is (and it is flawed), you move into lawlessness and anarchy.

If Venables had stopped re-offending I can understand why his identity should be kept secret.

However he has continued with crime and, even worse imo, is the fact these crimes were of a sexual nature against children.

I wasn't sure where I stood at the beginning of this debate but I am now...imo, Venables was only entitled to anonymity as long as he remained a law abiding citizen. I could have accepted when he killed Jamie Bulger he was a child and maybe he could have changed as an adult.

However, as an adult, and knowing he should be keeping under the radar, he decided to re-offend against children. He chose to download porn and distribute amongst people of a similar ilk. He chose to victimise more children.

I'm unsure of whether he was out on license when released for the crime against Bulger. If he was then I'd revoke this license. Imo he remains a danger to children and there safety should be paramount-not his.

One way to prove you've got a mind is to be able to change it. :D Shaz, your points are spot on - he continued to live outside of the law and therefore has foregone any protection previously afforded him.

I didn't see anything on Facebook, but as a result of this thread, did some Googling and soon found images purporting to be him.
