Ah but ships like that carry close to $1bn worth of goods. Which means you can charge commensurately more money for them to pass. If you send all these ships round by the cape, Egypt loses hundreds of millions a year.
Avarice being what it is, it is unlikely to happen.
I did read an article about reduced sulphur bunker fuel which causes all kinds of problems like blackouts on the engines. I will be watching to see the result of the investigation.
