Every indication from Boris's briefing tonight that restrictions - particularly face masks on transport and in shops - will be re-imposed; Javid to specify next week.

It's a bit of a rolling ball game at the moment until more is known about this latest variant.

We now have plan B-lighter than lite. It is not much different from what we have been doing things for months, except for masks, and Andy Burnham hits the nail on the head when he says most of us have got restrictions fatigue. We are even more reluctant when restrictions are imposed based on gut feelings, conjecture and incomplete evidence from scientists and politicians.

And please can the media and politicians stop banging on about Christmas. It has lost any religious meaning for most of us and is now and hedonistic consumerism fest for the benefit of business and one we could hold on any day of the year.
