Food waste.

I have just been watching Jamie and Jimmy.

They visited a farm growing 75 different kinds of fruit and vegetables where 20% gets composted because the supermarket chains will not buy them for cosmetic reasons. Throughout the whole country the waste comes in at 40%. The UK currently imports 47% of its food, much of which is perfect versions of the stuff our farmers are throwing away. The cost in seed, fertiliser, manpower and transport is enormous. It is madness, obscene and, to my mind, criminal. The farm visited throws away £10,000 worth of perfectly edible produce every week.

This is waste on a gigantic scale and all for the sake of looks. Surely it is something for the government to be looking into?

Asda are offering large boxes of so-called wonky veg at the moment, for £3.50. An excellent idea 8-)

I quite agree. It is a shocking waste of good food. Something needs to be done about it.

We're going to have a look at these if they start selling them in our local store. We make rather a lot of soup .....

Ossie, I hate the big city centre Asda here as it's always horribly crowded, with tiny aisles, and makes me feel claustrophobic! There is a big new superstore out at Quedgely though ( about 3 miles out) so I'm thinking of having a look up there, just in case! I also love soups so this would be great!

Just had another look at that list, none of the Asdas near here are participating :(

Same here, Kaz, I think our nearest is Halesowen which is a bit of a long way to go for a bent carrot! But if it's a success, I'm sure the idea will spread ....

Morrisons has said it will introduce loose wonky veg, now that is more to my liking as I can buy the things I want.

I am not saying that Asda's approach is wrong, I think it is a great idea, and my local store is taking part. I will go have a look and report back. ;) 8-)
